The Irish Healer by Nancy Herriman is a fascinating glimpse into 1830′s London medicine as well as a gripping love story between a man and woman neither of whom can forgive themselves for their past transgressions. Two medical personalities, with guilts and demons of their own to face, doubting God’s grace. Their love story unfolds despite social and racial boundaries, broken families, death, sickness and bitterness.

After being wrongly accused of murder, Rachel flees her homeland and takes refuge with the friend of a distant relative. She no longer trusts in her abilities-or God’s mercy–though when a cholera epidemic sweeps through London, she feels compelled to nurse the dying daughter of the enigmatic physician she has come to love. Her employer, also a physician, stumbled from his faith years ago when his wife died. They both struggle with trust in God and overcoming some obstacles in their past. When a cholera epidemic hits London, they each hit bottom, turning to the Lord for the ultimate support.

This is a charming, inspirational, and suspenseful story. Nancy Herriman has captured the attitudes and culture of the various social classes as they are effected by the cholera. The characters developed throughout the book and the conversations flowed flawlessly. This beautiful love story touched my heart and I highly recommend it to any who enjoy listening historical romance.

In Beastly Things, Donna Leon’s detective Guido Brunetti, Commissario di Polizia of the city of Venice, manages to retain his romantic side despite the intrigues, deceptions, and lies of the government because he feels fortunate to live amidst the splendor that is Venice. The plot is about a murder investigation when the body of a man is found in a canal without any kind of identification.

The body of a man is found in a canal, damaged by the tides, carrying no wallet, and wearing only one shoe. It will then take quite a while for Brunetti and Vianello to discover who the victim was, but eventually they learn he was not a Venetian, but a man from the nearby inland town of Mestre. Even after the victim is identified–the name of Dottor Andrea Nava’s killer seems less mysterious than the question of why someone, anyone, would have stabbed him in the back three times and dumped his body into a Venetian canal. When Brunetti visits the slaughterhouse and begins to examine how it operates, the inspector comes to some unsettling conclusions about the murdered man, the motive, and his own life.

As subtle and engrossing as ever, Leon’s Beastly Things is immensely enjoyable, intriguing, and ultimately moving. The author portrays the Commissioner Brunetti as a normal human being and not as a detective gifted with supernatural powers to solve a murder case. The atmosphere of the city, along with Leon’s sharp insights and powerful narrative, validate her often-recognized status as a master of literary crime fiction. It is refreshing to come across a mystery that is free of theatrics, melodrama, and contrivances. Highly recommend.

“Born to Darkness” is the first novel in Suzanne Brockmann’s “Fighting Destiny” series. It is set in the future and this future consists of a drug called Destiny, humans with super powers that can stop bullets and help them heal themselves! The audiobook explodes with three avid love stories, a lost and endangered girl, people with incredible mental abilities, deranged and diabolical perpetrators, and explosives.

Shane is an ex-SEAL who’s been blacklisted from the Navy and is desperate for work. When he is mysteriously contacted by the Obermeyer Institute he feels he has nothing to loose. He enters the OI compound, he is plunged into a strange world where seemingly mild-mannered scientists—including women half his size—can kick his highly skilled ass. Shane, Mac, and the others at OI eventually find themselves in the position of having to rescue this Potential from the Organization’s clutches. Stopping them from peddling the results of their butchery and sadistic torture is the ultimate goal….that’s the challenge.

This is a dark story. The world building was well developed, the plot kept me guessing and the romantic interludes were steamy! Each of the main characters has been trained to be efficient fighters both physically and mentally yet they all have their individual strengths and weaknesses. It will be interesting to see how the characters grow mentally as they continue to fight the Organization. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys audiobooks with characters that have special powers, or just enjoys a good listen.

Ann Rule’s The Stranger Beside Me defies our expectation that we would surely know if a monster lived among us, worked alongside of us, appeared as one of us. Ann Rule starts with a brief biographical sketch, then details everything that happened in Ted Bundy’s life from about 1971 until his execution in 1989. It was a good overall picture of his adult life, and gave as much of a balanced view of his as is likely possible. No gratuitous gore here; just the basic, bone-chilling evidence.

Ann knew Bundy, worked alongside him in a crisis center, and although she was a former policewoman with a real talent for researching sociopaths, Bundy was so intelligent, so charming, so seemingly “normal,” that Rule never once suspected his darkness. Having known Bundy before he became infamous as a serial killer, Rule gives insight into Bundy’s personality and character, from his childhood, through his adolescence into his political and legal aspirations, all the while fostering a murderous rage toward women. Ann continued to correspond with Bundy in prison, even providing money for his commissary fund, almost until the end.

Ann Rule narratives are honest, straightforward accounts of events as she knows them, no sensational embellishments. It’s amazing how she transitions from not knowing anything about the murders to not believing the murders to accepting that her friend, Ted, was a serial killer. Pondering, coming to a hazy digest of what deems to be, and would be pleaded to be all just a story is in truth a bitter and tragic reality faced upon so many boundless and quant human souls. I recommend this audiobook for anyone with a fixation on serial killers.

Click to download Bernie Krause The Great Animal Orchestra audiobook for iPhone, Android or mp3 player.

The Great Animal Orchestra is the story of one man’s pursuit of natural music in its purest form, and an impassioned case for the conservation of one of our most overlooked natural resources-the music of the wild. Krause awakens the spirit of the listener from the ennui of the everyday to the acoustic susurrations that surround us each day. It offer new insights into how animals have organized their voices to optimize intraspecies communication.

In this audiobook Bernie Krause helps us to hear and appreciate the often hidden musicians in a new way. Krause’s musical expertise allows him to hear the orchestral layering of different species in each biophony, an insight that explains group vocalization as an evolutionary survival mechanism rather than a purposeful chorus of noise. He teaches us that when one listens closely in a given habitat they can discover that what at first may sound random is actually acoustically defined territories of individual species, each communicating within an individual bandwidth.

Krause ends by suggesting that if we travel lightly and conscientiously among the remaining special places, we may be able to preserve and listen to intact animal orchestras. This is an extremely informative audiobook. The author’s originality, research, and above all basic knowledge of the sound environments in nature are impressive. It is a must listen audiobook for students of sound, music, communication, animal behavior and evolution biology. Highly recommend.

Fall from Grace is a stunning tale of betrayal and love—family members torn apart as the possible murder of the patriarch, whose power and prestige have dominated for decades, unravels secrets and scandals against the dramatic backdrop of the unforgiving Vineyard landscape. It is basically a two man story between Adam Blaine and his recently deceased father. There is a completely dysfunctional family whose members all conceal dark secrets.

After 10 years away from home, Adam Blaine returns to Martha’s Vineyard after his estranged father, world-famous writer Benjamin Blaine, is found dead at the bottom of a high promontory overlooking the sea. Soon after the funeral, Adam learns that his famous novelist father changed his will and excluded his wife and Adam’s brother, Teddy, who is gay. Using his training as a CIA operative, Adam skillfully seeks to obscure the evidence suggesting that a family member may have killed his father, while at the same time fighting to undo the will, which favors the enigmatic Carla. Adam then struggles with and tries to make sense of the events and the dysfunctional mess that is his family.

The story is told mostly through a series of interviews and flashbacks, which gradually build up the complex, overbearing, and often cruel character of the deceased. The psychological intrigue lying just beneath the surface of this entirely dysfunctional group of people make it a good one right up to its end. The characters are memorable, the setting of Martha’s Vineyard is very well-done. Highly recommend. I can’t wait to see what Richard North Patterson will do next.

With Beyond the Sling audiobook, Mayim Bialik has developed a fantastic guide to birth and parenting that is packed with invaluable wisdom. Mayim discusses the philosophy’s main components, including co-sleeping, baby-wearing, extended nursing, and natural birth, using her own experiences as a mother as well as her background in neuroscience to illustrate and shore up her points. Mayim describes the beauty, simplicity, and purposefulness of attachment parenting, and how it has become the guiding principle for her family.

Mayim Bialik is perhaps best known for her lead role, she found that when she followed her intuition and relaxed into her role as a mother instead of following some rigid parenting script, both she and her children thrived. These are the three maxims actress and mother of two Mayim claims parents must let go of in order to raise a child in the attachment parenting way. Guidelines set by Attachment Parenting International include natural childbirth, breastfeeding, sensitivity to the child and bonding. The main message of the book is that you intuitively know the best way to parent your own children, and to trust what feels right over what society tells you is normal.

There are numerous books on parenting, this is not your typical one, it is heart felt and personal. Mayim’s warmth, dedication, and professionalism are felt throughout this wonderful book. The audiobook is broken down into parts so you can easily skip to the section in which you are most interested. At once conversational, informative and progressive, this book should be compulsory reading for anyone who has even considered becoming a parent.

Drowning Instinct by Ilsa J. Bick is a story that weaves through the lives of broken people looking for something to grasp on to, before they drown in the desolation of their own existence. The main plot is about Jenna’s relationship with an older man, her science teacher Mr. Anderson. It is a novel of pain, deception, desperation, and love against the odds–and the rules.

Bearing scars both literal and figurative, Jenna Lord, 16, falls for Mitch Anderson, the married chemistry teacher who helps her survive a rocky start at a Wisconsin science magnet school. Jenna knows her friendship with her chemistry teacher Mitch Anderson is a road she shouldn’t go down, but since her brother was sent to Iraq, he is the only person who “gets” her. Isolated, with a domineering, plastic-surgeon dad and alcoholic, bookstore-owner mom, Jenna’s increasingly smitten with Mitch, who goes out of his way to advocate for her and invite her into his life. When Jenna is given the chance to tell her story, she decides honesty should be the best policy.

The novel begins slowly but quickly builds steam-and controversy-with unexpected turns and revelations. Nothing in this book is black and white. The characters are flawed and they are vulnerable, but ultimately they are only trying to do what is right for themselves. It will break your heart and no doubt leave you questioning much of what you believe about right and wrong. It’s realistic, poignant and will punch you in the gut by the end of the book. Fans of Laurie Halse Anderson or Patricia McCormick will love undoubtedly love this book.

Doyle’s third book, Deliriously Happy collects Doyle’s humorous essays from The New Yorker, National Lampoon, Esquire, and elsewhere. Encompassing parody, absurdism, black satire, loopy ephemera and unhinged silliness, the author displays a mastery of varied stylistic approaches and comic voices, from the Pynchonesque t.V. to a bravura approximation of Mark Twain in Huck of Darkness, in which “lost” passages from Huckleberry Finn are re-inserted into the narrative, making the classic’s subtextual homosexual content decidedly more emphatic.

There are 54 comic essays in this book (57 if you include the hilarious “Acknowledgements”, “Addendum to the Acknowledgements” and “About the Author”, and really should) that range from the looney to the crass to the incredible, all extremely creative and most of the type to make you laugh out loud. Doyle repeatedly employs such devices as absurd lists (pretentious ice cream flavors, ideas for pet stores) and magazine-style questionnaires to help pace the collection and suggest a formal consistency, but the greatest pleasure is the sheer range of tones and subject matter on display.

The stories jump all over the map, written from several points of view and with several tones, from cutting edge to overdone. It is filled with sad, droll and biting humor; its best pieces will leave listeners wondering whether to laugh or cry, which is the mark of comedic genius. Truly an unpredictable, unfailingly intelligent demonstration of a unique wit given free reign. If you know someone with a strong funny bone, or have one of your own, you want to get this book. You really do.

Download Jeanette Winterson Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal AudioBook Unabridged MP3

March 11th, 2012

Click to download Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal audiobook for iPhone, Android or mp3 player.

Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? by Jeanette Winterson is a memoir about a life’s work to find happiness. Winterson recounts just how many times literature, the consumption and creation of it, saved her from mental depression, while sounding more relevant than self-involved. Winterson sees herself as troubled, still, but she also accepts herself for what she is, and the memoir in large part explains the path she took in this direction.

It is the story of how a painful past that Jeanette thought she’d written over and repainted rose to haunt her, sending her on a journey into madness and out again, in search of her biological mother. Because of her terrible childhood, she saw all parents as being people who could only hurt children, whether psychologically or physically. Without spoiling it, she grew up in grim situations, often locked out of the house to sleep outside on the steps, with a domineering and somewhat insane evangelical mother, who constantly makes her feel unwanted. Courage and imagination fortify Jeanette Winterson, combined with the escape of literature.

Rich in autobiographical detail, it is as wide and bold an experiment in the memoir form as any so far written. It is heartbreakingly sad and funny, brave and brilliant. The way Jeanette Winterson expresses her thoughts is magical and poetic. It reminds me slightly of Joyce Carol Oates latest, in that it is also intensely open and autobiographical. Highly recommended.
